UWM is the largest higher education and research centre in Warmia and Mazury Region in north-eastern Poland. It was founded on 1 September 1999At the moment the university employs about 3300 employees of which 2000 are professors including 230 full professors and 280 associated professors.

University scientific research includes its fundamental statutory activity, personal research, research projects, target projects, investments serving the needs of research and development work, research support, ministry programmes, financing the upkeep of scientific equipment, projects financed by structural funds or the European Union, commissioned work, grants for financing scientific projects.

Several departments at the University have been involved in International Scientific Programmes including FP6 and FP 7.


The Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture is involved in OPTIFERT with two  of its departments: the Department the Department of Land Reclamation and Environmental Management and the Department of Agrochemistry and Environmental Protection.


Besides teaching both departments are implementing a viable research programme on management of water resources in north-eastern Poland within the region called “The Green Lungs of Poland”. Their current research programs have focused on various issues of water management including use of water, waterlogging and water quality problems, performance evaluation of irrigation and drainage systems, water quality and environmental issues.
